Nor'easter Winter Storm Hernando Paralyzes New York City: Mayor Implements Travel Ban

A strong Nor’easter, known as Winter Storm Hernando, has brought New York City to a halt, prompting Mayor Zohran Mamdani to implement a Travel Ban to restrict non-essential movement on city streets, highways, and bridges. The storm, which began on February 22 and is expected to last until midday on February 23, has intensified snowfall and deteriorated conditions in the Northeast region.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide emergency in anticipation of the storm's impact, as it has already deposited several inches of snow in parts of New York and New Jersey, with snowfall rates predicted to reach 2 to 3 inches per hour. Some areas could see up to 18 to 24 inches of snow, with isolated totals nearing 28 inches by the time the storm passes.

Meteorologists have warned of extremely treacherous conditions, making travel nearly impossible during peak snowfall. Winter Storm Hernando, a Nor’easter, is the result of cold Arctic air colliding with warm, moisture-rich air from the Atlantic Ocean, creating a potent low-pressure system capable of heavy snow, high winds, and coastal flooding simultaneously.

The storm's impact extends beyond transportation, with wind gusts of 65 to 70 miles per hour posing risks of downed trees, power outages, and flooding in coastal areas. Thousands of flights have been canceled, affecting major airports like JFK and LaGuardia, while public schools, Broadway performances, and events like horse races at Aqueduct Racetrack have been disrupted.

This Nor’easter is the first blizzard warning issued for New York City in nearly ten years and the second significant winter emergency under Mayor Mamdani's leadership, following a deadly cold snap earlier this year. The storm's intensity and widespread effects have prompted officials to take aggressive measures to ensure public safety.
