The list also features Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, Pink, New Edition, Sade, and the Wu-Tang Clan. Billy Idol and Joy Division/New Order return to the nominations this year, along with The Black Crowes and Oasis. Collins, known for hits like "In The Air Tonight," has won eight Grammys, while Hill's "The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill" made history at the Grammys. Carey has had 19 No. 1 hits, Sade is known for soft rock hits, and the Wu-Tang Clan are rap innovators.

Inxs dominated the late 1980s charts, Etheridge is a two-time Grammy winner, Iron Maiden helped shape British heavy metal, and New Edition and Shakira have had notable hits. Pink has had multiple No. 1 songs and albums. Ten of the nominees are first-time ballot entries, including Buckley, Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan. The inductees will be announced in April, along with those entering under special committee categories. Artists must have released their first recording at least 25 years before eligibility. The nominees will be voted on by a panel of artists, historians, and music industry professionals.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation chairman, John Sykes, highlighted the diverse list of nominees and their impact on youth culture. Last year's inductees included Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Soundgarden, Joe Cocker, Salt-N-Pepa, The White Stripes, Carol Kaye, Nicky Hopkins, Lenny Waronker, Thom Bell, and Warren Zevon.
