University of Cincinnati Takes Legal Action Against Former Quarterback for NIL Agreement Breach

The University of Cincinnati has taken legal action against former quarterback Brendan Sorsby for failing to honor a $1 million buyout clause in a name, image, and likeness (NIL) agreement. Sorsby allegedly signed an 18-month NIL contract in July 2025, which required him to pay the university $1 million if he transferred before the agreement's expiration on Dec. 15, 2026. Despite this, Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech with one year of eligibility left, prompting UC to pursue legal action.
In response to the situation, the University of Cincinnati Athletics Department emphasized its commitment to upholding contractual agreements with student-athletes. The department expects student-athletes to honor their commitments as well. By signing the NIL agreement with UC, Sorsby had agreed to represent the university for two football seasons and pay a specified amount if he left before the agreed-upon timeframe. UC intends to enforce this contractual obligation to protect the university's interests and resources.
While the legal proceedings are ongoing, the University of Cincinnati expressed gratitude to Brendan Sorsby for his time as a Bearcat and wished him success in his future endeavors. The case highlights the importance of honoring contractual agreements in the realm of college athletics, particularly concerning name, image, and likeness arrangements.
