MiddleSea: Billy Joel's Iconic Centre Island Estate Sells for Record $28.75 Million

Billy Joel has sold his Centre Island compound, MiddleSea, for $28.75 million, marking the most expensive residential deal on Long Island outside of the Hamptons. The estate, known as "the house on the hill," was a personal retreat for Joel for over two decades. The property was expanded to roughly 21 acres, including two buildable waterfront lots and a gatehouse. After listing the estate for $49.9 million in 2023, Joel divided it into three parcels, leading to a successful sale strategy.

The main residence, a 20,000-square-foot red-brick manor, underwent a five-year renovation, preserving its stately architecture while modernizing its features. The property was split into the main residence priced at $29.9 million and two 3-acre lots with the gatehouse priced at $4.95 million each. This repositioning attracted global interest and resulted in a competitive bidding war, ultimately closing with an undisclosed buyer.

MiddleSea is considered a landmark in Centre Island, known for its unique stature and prestigious location. The estate features a renovated manor with six bedrooms, 11 baths, a grand ballroom, a wine cellar, spa facilities, a private bowling alley, and extensive entertaining spaces. The property boasts over 1,500 feet of sandy shoreline, a tennis court, a pool, a private dock, and manicured lawns overlooking Long Island Sound. Additional amenities include a guest house, beach house, and an eight-car garage.

Despite selling MiddleSea, Billy Joel remains connected to Long Island and plans to spend more time in Florida. The sale of MiddleSea represents a significant milestone in Long Island real estate, showcasing the allure and exclusivity of properties in the region.
