Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport Runway Reconstruction Project: Enhancing Safety and Reliability
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is set to undergo a major runway reconstruction project that will see one of its two runways closed for about eight months. The $27.1 million rehabilitation project will focus on the north-south runway, known as Runway 2/20, starting on March 2. During this period, all aircraft operations will be redirected to the east-west runway, Runway 11/29, to ensure minimal disruption to airline schedules.
The Runway 2/20 Keel Rehabilitation & Buildout Project aims to enhance safety and reliability for passengers, airlines, and aviation partners. The project includes full reconstruction of the runway's center panels, replacement of in-pavement centerline lights, resealing of pavement joints, and application of new runway markings. Additionally, crews will demolish parts of abandoned airfield pavement and upgrade the approach lighting system for the east-west runway.
The temporary closure of Runway 2/20 is part of the airport's ongoing efforts to maintain world-class infrastructure and comply with FAA standards. The project is expected to be completed by December 2026 and is primarily funded through the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program. While some areas near the airport may experience increased aircraft noise during construction, airline operations and flight schedules will remain unaffected.
