Montreal Canadiens' Cole Caufield Shatters Franchise Record with Scoring Prowess

Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield showcased his scoring prowess once again in a game against the Washington Capitals, setting a new franchise record previously held by Guy Lafleur. Caufield scored two crucial goals in the Canadiens' 6-2 victory, tying and then surpassing Lafleur's record of 20 goals in a single season. Lafleur had set the record during the team's 1977-78 Stanley Cup-winning season with 60 goals. Caufield, with 35 goals this season, is just five goals away from reaching the coveted 40-goal milestone, a feat not achieved by a Canadiens player since Vincent Damphousse in 1993-94.
Caufield wasted no time in the game, scoring his 34th goal of the season just 30 seconds into the contest on a breakaway. He followed it up with his 35th goal later in the first period, setting a new record for the most go-ahead goals in a season with 21. The Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin also found the back of the net in the game, but the Canadiens responded with goals from Caufield's linemates Kirby Dach and Nick Suzuki, as well as Jake Evans and Mike Matheson. Caufield's impressive performance has earned him 60 points in 59 games this season, putting him on track to potentially reach 49 goals by the end of the season, with the last Canadiens player to score 50 goals being Stephane Richer in 1989-90.
With his two goals against the Capitals, Caufield also tied Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan Mackinnon for the most goals scored in the league on Saturdays. The young forward's exceptional scoring ability and record-breaking performances have solidified his position as a key player for the Canadiens and a rising star in the NHL.
