Remembering George Harrison: A Tribute to the Beatles' Iconic Guitarist

Dear Editor,

Time truly does fly when you're having fun, and looking back, it's hard to believe how quickly it passes. The recent realization that George Harrison would have turned 83 this week sparked a wave of nostalgia for me. Back when I first discovered him, he was just 20, and I was a mere 13.

George's name was an integral part of the Beatles' iconic lineup: John, Paul, George, and Ringo. It's a sequence that feels ingrained in my memory, and any deviation just doesn't sound right. Despite the fame and success they enjoyed, there was always a tinge of sympathy for Ringo, who seemed somewhat overshadowed by the others.

In those early days of Beatlemania, deciphering the individual band members was a challenge. We relied on a handful of photographs, like the one on the cover of their debut album, "Meet the Beatles!" The image puzzled us – why did they look so glum when they were on top of the world with chart-topping hits and appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show?

As we pored over the album at Woolworth's, the back cover offered a more cheerful glimpse of the band in their signature suits and Beatle boots. However, even in that joyful moment, the order of their names seemed slightly off, with Paul taking the lead instead of John. These subtle discrepancies didn't escape our notice.

The confusion extended to identifying the authentic Beatles record amidst a sea of imitations like the Liverpools and Beat-A-Mania. My supposed expertise, stemming from my grandmother's Liverpool roots, briefly earned me a cool status among my peers. The quest for the genuine article led us to scrutinize track listings and accents, ultimately relying on the running time of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to confirm our selection.

Our discernment paid off, and we avoided falling for counterfeit versions. This exercise in critical thinking, though unwitting at the time, proved invaluable. It also inadvertently sparked a fashion trend among us rebellious teenagers, thanks to George Harrison's perfectly pegged pants in the album photo.

Those pegged pants became a symbol of defiance against the school's uniform policy, with one enterprising friend finding a tailor to customize them at a fraction of the cost. Despite the school's disapproval, our parents appreciated the savings, and soon, pegged pants became an unofficial part of our uniform, all inspired by George's stylish flair.

So, as we fondly remember George Harrison on what would have been his 83rd birthday, let's raise a toast to the enduring impact he had on our lives, from music to fashion.

Sincerely,

Jon Leonard
