EmpowerHER Grant: Celebrating Women's History Month with the Pittsburgh Penguins and 84 Lumber
In March, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are honoring Women’s History Month with a series of community events and a small business grant. This initiative is part of 84 Lumber’s L.I.F.T. program, which aims to empower and inspire women to thrive. The partnership with the Penguins focuses on recognizing female fans and supporting woman-owned businesses in the Pittsburgh area through grants, auctions, and professional panels.
The EmpowerHER Grant is a key component of this celebration, highlighting local businesses and awarding one winner with $25,000 to support their company. From over 700 nominations, three finalists were chosen: Brick House Chic Boutique, K-nine Confections, and Lelulo’s Pizzeria. Public voting for the grant is open until March 13, with the winner set to be announced on March 22.
84 Lumber, a woman-owned business, is the primary supporter of the grant and related events. Amy Smiley, the vice president of marketing at 84 Lumber, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting women-owned businesses in the communities they serve. The partnership with the Penguins underscores their dedication to making a positive impact and fostering the growth of small businesses.
On March 22, the Penguins will host the eighth annual Her Hockey Day during their game against the Carolina Hurricanes at 3 p.m. This event is designed to honor female fans and will feature informational tables throughout the arena concourse. These tables will showcase organizations that advocate for female empowerment in Western Pennsylvania. A special ticket package for the game includes a game ticket and an exclusive Her Hockey Day shirt designed by a female Penguins fan and artist.
During the game on March 22, the Penguins Foundation will conduct the Her Hockey Auction from March 22 to March 30. The auction will feature items such as locker room nameplates, autographed memorabilia, and artwork by female artists. The proceeds from the auction and other fundraising activities on game day will support the Pittsburgh Pennies, a girls' ice hockey program aimed at increasing participation in the sport.
In conjunction with the game, the Penguins and 84 Lumber will host the L.I.F.T. Women’s Panel on March 22. This panel discussion will feature women professionals from diverse industries that have traditionally been male-dominated. The panelists will share insights on the importance of empowerment in overcoming professional challenges.
Overall, the Women’s History Month celebration with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation is a testament to their commitment to recognizing and supporting women in the community. Through events like the EmpowerHER Grant, Her Hockey Day, and the L.I.F.T. Women’s Panel, they are championing female empowerment and highlighting the contributions of women in various fields.
