Dennis Cometti: A Tribute to an Australian Broadcasting Legend
Renowned sports commentator and Australian broadcasting legend Dennis Cometti has sadly passed away at the age of 76. Hailing from Geraldton, Western Australia, Cometti had an illustrious 53-year career in the media industry from 1968 to 2021. He was known for his exceptional commentary skills, particularly in Australian rules football, and his iconic calls have left a lasting impact on the AFL.
Cometti's broadcasting journey included stints at various radio stations, with his final AFL match commentary being the 2021 AFL Grand Final for Triple M. Prior to that, he had worked at 3AW and the ABC. In addition to his broadcasting career, Cometti also had a brief but notable football career, playing for West Perth in the WAFL, where he participated in 38 games and scored 70 goals from 1967 to 1971.
In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Cometti was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2020. He is also honored in the Melbourne Cricket Club and AFMA Halls of Fame. Despite being listed as a senior player at Footscray, Cometti did not play a VFL game due to his media commitments and injuries.
Recently, it was announced that a special documentary celebrating Cometti's remarkable career, titled 'Centimetre Perfect,' would be released this year. The title pays homage to one of his famous one-liners that have become synonymous with his commentary style. Dennis Cometti's legacy in the world of sports broadcasting will continue to be cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
