Disney's 'Songs in Sign Language': Reimagining Musical Numbers for Deaf Audiences

New animated sequences of songs from popular Disney movies are coming to Disney+. The project, titled "Songs in Sign Language," will feature three musical numbers from "Encanto," "Frozen 2," and "Moana 2" reimagined in American Sign Language. Directed by Disney animator Hyrum Osmond, the new versions of these songs will debut on April 27 in honor of National Deaf History Month. The animations were created in collaboration with Deaf West Theatre, with a focus on staying true to the original songs' emotions and concepts.

The team behind "Songs in Sign Language" worked on creating entirely new animations for the project. Led by Osmond, a group of more than 20 animators put in the effort to ensure that the animations captured the essence of the original songs. Deaf West Theatre's artistic director DJ Kurs and sign language reference choreographer Catalene Sacchetti, along with a team of performers, crafted the ASL versions of the musical numbers. The goal was to integrate ASL into the storytelling of Disney movies and reach a global audience.

For Kurs and his team, collaborating with Disney on this project was a historic opportunity to bring their language into the world of Disney storytelling. The team aimed to create a meaningful connection with Deaf children and open up possibilities for future projects that incorporate sign language. Osmond, whose father is deaf, saw this project as a personal opportunity to connect with the Deaf community and break down communication barriers through the beauty of sign language.

The reimagining of Disney Animation musical numbers in sign language is a significant step towards inclusivity and accessibility in entertainment. By showcasing the beauty of sign language in animated sequences, Disney is creating a special connection with audiences in the Deaf community. The project not only highlights the importance of representation but also serves as a meaningful way to bridge communication gaps and foster understanding among diverse audiences.
