The Naked Gun Series: Will Police Squad Return for Another Adventure?

Fans of the Naked Gun series may have to wait a bit longer to see if Police Squad will return for another adventure. The most recent installment, a reboot directed by Akiva Schaffer and starring Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, and Paul Walter Hauser, was released by Paramount Pictures last summer. This marked the fourth film in the franchise that began with Leslie Nielsen as detective Frank Drebin in the original 1988 movie after originating on ABC's Police Squad!
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote the second season of the Peacock series Ted, producer Seth MacFarlane, who worked on the latest Naked Gun film, expressed interest in a potential sequel with Neeson reprising his role as Frank Drebin Jr. However, MacFarlane mentioned that they have not received any updates yet and that the decision lies with Paramount.
The reboot of The Naked Gun performed well at the box office, grossing $102 million globally. Screenwriters Dan Gregor and Doug Mand have already started brainstorming ideas for a follow-up, as confirmed in an interview with THR. Producer Erica Huggins also mentioned discussions within the team about a possible sequel.
Director Akiva Schaffer, however, stated in a recent interview with CBR that they are not currently planning another sequel, despite having some previous discussions about it. The recent acquisition of Paramount Global by Skydance Media shortly after the film's release could potentially impact the future of a sequel.
In a review of last year's The Naked Gun, THR's chief film critic David Rooney noted that the film had enough humorous moments to please fans of the franchise and potentially attract new audiences. As fans eagerly await news of a potential sequel, the future of Police Squad remains uncertain.
