Title: South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT Boosts AI Capabilities with GPU Distribution Program

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT has initiated the distribution of graphics processing units (GPUs) to various sectors to enhance the country's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The ministry plans to provide around 4,000 GPUs from a total of 10,000 units acquired through last year's supplementary budget. These GPUs will support 159 projects across industry, academia, and research institutions.

The allocation of GPUs includes 2,624 units for universities and academic institutions, 1,288 for industry, and 312 for research institutes. Following a rigorous selection process based on factors like technological impact and societal contribution, the chosen projects will focus on AI research and development, including model development and services.

To ensure proper utilization, the ministry will conduct regular monitoring of the allocated GPUs. In case of misuse, the GPUs may be reclaimed and reassigned to other deserving users. Additionally, the ministry plans to issue another call for proposals later this month, with a focus on providing GPUs to small and midsize companies, startups, academia, and research institutions.

Future rounds of GPU distribution will prioritize applicants from regions outside the capital area and aim to prevent the concentration of allocations in specific entities. Choi Dong-won, the ministry's director general for AI infrastructure policy, emphasized that the GPU program aims to boost AI capabilities, foster AI services, and stimulate demand for infrastructure in a mutually reinforcing cycle.

In conclusion, South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT is taking proactive steps to bolster the country's AI capacity by distributing GPUs to various sectors and supporting AI research and development initiatives. This initiative is expected to drive innovation, strengthen AI capabilities, and foster a vibrant AI ecosystem in South Korea.
