Beach Boys' Bruce Johnston Announces Departure: A New Chapter Begins
Bruce Johnston, a longtime member of the Beach Boys' live band, has announced his departure from the group. The 82-year-old musician expressed his excitement for the next phase of his musical career, emphasizing his passion for songwriting. Johnston's decision to step away was met with praise from fellow band member Mike Love, who highlighted Johnston's contributions as a songwriter, vocalist, and keyboardist.
Having initially joined the Beach Boys in 1965 as a live vocalist, Johnston made significant contributions to the group, including a vocal credit on the iconic track "California Girls." After a brief hiatus to pursue solo endeavors, Johnston returned to the band in 1978 and continued to tour with them, solidifying his place as a key member of the group. Known for his songwriting skills, Johnston penned hits such as "Disney Girls (1957)," "Deirdre," and "Tears in the Morning."
Following Johnston's departure, Chris Cron, vocalist for the Beach Boys tribute band Pet Sounds Live, will step in to fill his role. Despite the changes in the lineup, fans of the Beach Boys can still enjoy live performances of their favorite songs. The band, led by Mike Love, is set to perform at the Hollywood Bowl over the July 4 weekend, with Johnston making a special appearance. Additionally, founding member Al Jardine is touring with Brian Wilson's former backing ensemble, now known as the Pet Sounds Band, focusing on the 1977 album "The Beach Boys Love You."
