Exploring New Horizons: Bruce Campbell's Shift from Evil Dead to Ernie & Emma

The creators of the Evil Dead franchise, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert, have expressed their intention to continue producing new entries in the series, aiming for a sequel or spin-off every two to three years. They have already hired directors for upcoming movies, including Sébastien Vaniček for Evil Dead Burn, set to release in July 2026, and Francis Galluppi for Evil Dead Wrath. Campbell has revealed that he will have a lesser role in these new films compared to previous installments.

Campbell explained that he feels disconnected from the corporate development process of the new Evil Dead movies, preferring to focus on his own projects. He cited a script development meeting where a young director received extensive notes on his treatment, leading Campbell to realize that he no longer wanted to be heavily involved in the decision-making process. As a result, he is concentrating on his own movie, Ernie & Emma, a comedy that he wrote and directed.

Ernie & Emma follows widowed pear salesman Ernie Tyler as he fulfills his late wife's wishes by scattering her ashes in specific locations, reflecting on their marriage and his future. Campbell stars as Ernie, with Cerina Vincent, Ted Raimi, Emma Raimi, and Robin McAlpine also in the cast. The film explores themes of death and relationships, offering a unique perspective on aging and personal growth.

Despite his reduced involvement in the Evil Dead franchise, Campbell remains dedicated to his creative endeavors, including Ernie & Emma. He is currently undergoing cancer treatments but hopes to tour with the movie in the fall, showcasing it at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations nationwide. Campbell's decision to step back from the new Evil Dead movies reflects his desire to focus on projects that align more closely with his creative vision and personal interests.
