New Center Signed: Detroit Lions Secure Cade Mays on Three-Year Deal

The Detroit Lions have secured a new center for their team. They have reached an agreement with former Carolina Panthers starting center Cade Mays on a three-year, $25 million contract, with $14 million guaranteed. Mays, who will soon be 27 years old, has played in 52 games and started 27 for the Panthers, not allowing a sack in the last two seasons. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 325 pounds, Mays is a powerful lineman with good athleticism.
The Lions were in need of a center after Frank Ragnow's retirement and Graham Glasgow's release. While there was speculation about moving Tate Ratledge to center, the signing of Mays suggests Ratledge will remain at right guard. The competition for left guard may involve Christian Mahogany and Miles Frazier. The Lions are focused on improving their offensive line this offseason, but with Taylor Decker's release request, more work is needed. Nonetheless, Mays is a positive step towards addressing Detroit's key needs.
