Giannis Antetokounmpo Named Inaugural Laureate of European Order of Merit

Basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo has been named one of the inaugural laureates of the newly created European Order of Merit, as announced by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Strasbourg. The award recognizes individuals from various fields who have contributed to European integration and the promotion of European values. A ceremony to honor the laureates will be held during the European Parliament's plenary session in May.
The selection committee, led by Metsola and including prominent European figures, chose a diverse group of individuals for the honor. Among the distinguished members are former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Additionally, notable figures like chef José Andrés, scholar Marc Gjidara, and human rights lawyer Oleksandra Matviichuk have been appointed as members of the order.
Established in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the European Order of Merit aims to celebrate those who have played a role in shaping Europe's future. The award recognizes up to 20 individuals annually for their contributions to European unity and progress. Antetokounmpo, known as the "Greek Freak," joins a prestigious group of honorees who have made significant impacts in their respective fields and in the advancement of European values.
