Missed Hits: George Strait's Songs That Got Away

Country music legend George Strait is known for his chart-topping hits, but there are a few songs that slipped through his fingers. One such song is "Tennessee Whiskey," written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. Despite Strait passing on the song, it went on to become a massive success, with Chris Stapleton's version achieving double diamond certification.
Another missed opportunity for George Strait was "Friends In Low Places," a song that Garth Brooks recorded and made famous. Brooks revealed that he tried to emulate Strait's style when recording the demo. Interestingly, years later, Strait collaborated with Brooks on a version of the song for Brooks' boxed set, giving fans a taste of both artists.
"Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven," penned by Marty Dodson and Jim Collins, was another song that George Strait considered recording. However, the track eventually became a No. 1 hit for Kenny Chesney. Dodson shared that Strait initially cut the song but decided not to include it on his record. Fortunately for Chesney, Strait played the song for him, leading to its success on the charts.
