Tokyo International Film Festival 2026: Dates, Highlights, and Industry Insights

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) and its affiliated audiovisual content market TIFFCOM have announced the dates for their 2026 editions. The 39th TIFF will take place from October 26 to November 4, spanning 10 days, while the accompanying TIFFCOM market will run for three days from October 28-30. Both events will be held in their usual locations in Tokyo, with TIFF's main venues in the Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area and TIFFCOM at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center Hamamatsucho-Kan. A call for entries will open on April 7, and more information will be available on TIFF's official website.
The 2026 edition of the festival follows a successful 38th installment that took place from October 27 to November 5, 2025. The opening night red carpet at the Takarazuka Theater saw a star-studded lineup including Juliette Binoche, Fan Bingbing, Paul Schrader, and Japanese screen legend Yoshinaga Sayuri, who received the TIFF Lifetime Achievement Award. The festival introduced the Asian Students’ Film Conference, showcasing emerging talent from film schools in the region, while TIFFCOM expanded its Tokyo Gap-Financing Market and rebranded its story market as Tokyo IP Market: Adaptation & Remake to meet the growing international demand for Japanese intellectual property.
TIFF is hosted by Unijapan, while TIFFCOM is organized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), and Unijapan. Japan is the Country of Honor at this year’s Cannes Film Market, following a successful year in 2025 with a box office boom driven by "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1." The total box office receipts in Japan reached a record JPY274.45 billion ($1.79 billion), up 32% from the previous year. The highly anticipated Toho film, "Godzilla Minus Zero," is set to release in Japan on November 3, coinciding with Godzilla Day during the festival.
In conclusion, the Tokyo International Film Festival and TIFFCOM have announced the dates for their 2026 editions, building on the success of the previous year's event. With a lineup of international stars, new showcases for emerging talent, and a focus on Japanese intellectual property, the upcoming editions promise to be exciting and engaging for film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
