March 12, 2007 marked a significant day in music history as R.E.M., Patti Smith, and Van Halen were honored with induction into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, where these iconic artists were celebrated for their contributions to the music industry.

R.E.M., led by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, reunited with original drummer Bill Berry for a special performance of three songs, including a cover of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Patti Smith, inducted by Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine, delivered a powerful rendition of The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and her own track "People Have the Power" during the all-star jam.

Van Halen, inducted by Velvet Revolver, saw members David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar honored, with Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony attending the ceremony. Velvet Revolver performed "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," while Hagar and Anthony joined band leader Paul Shaffer for a rendition of "Why Can't This Be Love."

The evening also saw the induction of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and The Ronettes, adding to the diverse lineup of legendary musicians honored at the event. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was a memorable occasion that celebrated the enduring impact of these influential artists on the world of music.
