Unveiling the Genesis of Breaking Bad: Insights from Vince Gilligan and the Pluribus Panel at SXSW

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan shared the initial concept for the show during a panel at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival. He found a notebook with the idea of a good guy doing something bad to save his family, which evolved into the story of a high school chemistry teacher turned meth cook. Despite initial skepticism, Sony Pictures Television eventually embraced the show, while HBO passed on it. Gilligan emphasized the importance of the best idea winning in the writers' room and creating a positive work environment.

During the panel, Pluribus star Rhea Seehorn defended her character, Carol, against the label of being "unlikable," highlighting the importance of portraying complex and authentic female characters. Gilligan added that having a protagonist who contrasts with uniformly nice characters like The Others is essential for creating drama. Seehorn discussed her interpretation of the show's themes, focusing on human nature, the pursuit of happiness, and relationships.

Gilligan avoided defining the meaning of Pluribus, stating that it is open to interpretation and that he learns from others' perspectives on the show. The panel also featured composer Dave Porter, costume designer Jennifer Bryan, and producer Trina Siopy, discussing various aspects of the show and its characters.
