Arrest Made in Downtown San Jose Super Bowl Sunday Shooting Incident

A shooting incident occurred in downtown San Jose on Super Bowl Sunday, leading to the arrest of a suspect on charges of attempted murder. The San Jose Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of Santa Clara and Market streets. An altercation between two groups resulted in the suspect firing a firearm and injuring six people. Four victims were taken to the hospital, while one self-transported and another was treated at the scene. Fortunately, all injuries were non-life-threatening. The suspect fled the scene before the police arrived.
The SJPD Gang Investigations Unit Detectives, with the assistance of the Real Time Intelligence Center and automated license plate reader technology, identified the suspect vehicle used in the incident. The shooter was identified as Tyrone Asphy, a Washington state resident in town for the Super Bowl. Detectives obtained arrest and search warrants for Asphy and his associated residence. Working with the FBI and local law enforcement agencies, investigators confirmed Asphy had returned to Washington.
On March 11, SJPD detectives, in collaboration with the FBI and the Washington Regional Valley SWAT team, located and arrested Asphy at his residence in Federal Way, Washington. He is currently held in King County Jail awaiting an extradition hearing back to Santa Clara County. During the search, officers found the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
Chief of Police Paul Joseph emphasized the commitment of the San Jose Police Department to pursue those responsible for violence in the city. Asphy, 46, is now facing charges of attempted murder. The authorities are determined to ensure accountability for the violent actions that disrupted what should have been a day of celebration in downtown San Jose.
