Unveiling Glen Campbell's Hidden Contributions to Elvis Presley: The Story Behind 'Glen Campbell Sings for the King

Glen Campbell, a renowned musician and member of the Wrecking Crew, had the opportunity to record songs for Elvis Presley between 1964 and 1968. Despite his admiration for Presley, Campbell's recordings of songs written by Ben Weisman and Sid Wayne were lost for decades. The two artists first met in 1956 when Campbell was part of a band in Albuquerque, and later crossed paths in Los Angeles where Campbell was a session musician for hits like "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'." Campbell's ability to match Elvis's key and delivery led Weisman and Wayne to have him record demo versions of songs like "Clambake" and "Spinout."

In 1969, Campbell was considered for the lead guitar position in Elvis's TCB band but declined due to his successful solo career. Despite not working directly with Elvis, Campbell's contributions to the legend are evident in the demo recordings he made for Weisman and Wayne. These recordings, stored away for years, were rediscovered and released in the 2018 album "Glen Campbell Sings for the King," featuring 18 demo recordings. Among the 29 rescued recordings, 12 songs were eventually recorded and released by Elvis, showcasing Campbell's influence on Presley's music.

The album "Glen Campbell Sings for the King" offers a glimpse into Campbell's talent and the songs he recorded for Elvis. From "Easy Come, Easy Go" to "Do the Clam," listeners can appreciate Campbell's renditions of the songs that later became hits for Presley. The collaboration between Campbell and Presley is highlighted in tracks like "We Call On Him," showcasing the unique bond between the two artists. The album is a testament to Campbell's musical prowess and his impact on the iconic songs recorded by Elvis Presley.
