Chicago White Sox Starting Rotation Set for Opening Day: Shane Smith Leads the Way

The Chicago White Sox have finalized their starting rotation for the upcoming season. Shane Smith will kick off the season as the opening-day starter, followed by Sean Burke, Anthony Kay, Davis Martin, and Erick Fedde, according to manager Will Venable. The team will start their season on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 26, then head to Miami for a series against the Marlins before their home opener at Rate Field on April 2 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Burke, who held the opening-day starter role last season, has impressed Venable with his aggressive pitching style and ability to mix up his pitches effectively. Kay, who signed a two-year deal in the offseason, is making his return to the big leagues after playing in Japan for two seasons. Martin, the second-most utilized starter last season after Smith, and Fedde, who rejoined the team on a one-year deal in February, complete the starting rotation.

Jonathan Cannon, the sixth pitching option, was sent down to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. Despite a solid performance in spring training with a 4.09 ERA in four outings, Cannon was edged out by the five pitchers ahead of him in the rotation. Venable praised Cannon's camp performance, highlighting his ability to control the running game and execute strategic pitching decisions.

The decision to option Cannon was made to maintain pitching depth and allow him to continue developing and staying prepared for potential opportunities in the future. The White Sox are confident in their starting rotation and believe that Cannon's time will come as he continues to hone his skills in the minor leagues.
