Icon Film Distribution has acquired the UK and Ireland rights to Teodora Ana Mihai's "Heysel 85," a political thriller that delves into the tragic events of the Heysel Stadium disaster during the 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool FC and Juventus. The film sheds light on the inside story of the incident that resulted in the deaths of 39 football supporters, which were witnessed by millions of viewers on live TV. Despite the fatalities, the match proceeded as scheduled. The movie premiered at the Berlinale and has since secured distribution deals in various countries, with more negotiations underway.
"Heysel 85" follows the unfolding events through the perspectives of Marie, the press attaché of the mayor of Brussels, and Luca, a young journalist covering the match for the Italian media. The narrative offers a real-time portrayal of the tragedy rather than a historical reenactment. Set beneath the stadium, the film captures the chaos and desperation as bodies are brought in, and officials struggle to manage the crisis.
