Unveiling the L.A. Phil's 2026-27 Season: A Celebration of Innovation and Rituals

Gustavo Dudamel will bid farewell to the Los Angeles Philharmonic as music director in a grand Hollywood Bowl event on August 23. Following his departure, the L.A. Phil will be without a music director for the first time in 64 years. However, Dudamel will return to conduct Beethoven at Walt Disney Concert Hall before Esa-Pekka Salonen, the music conductor laureate, takes on the role of creative director in January, ensuring the orchestra's continued innovative leadership.

The L.A. Phil's 2026-27 season promises to be as adventurous as ever, with a diverse lineup of events, series, festivals, and new music initiatives. Salonen will curate a "Rituals Festival" exploring the significance of rituals in our lives, from the mundane to the profound. The season will feature a range of performances, including multimedia collaborations, operatic studies, and premieres of new works by acclaimed composers.

Dudamel will continue his exploration of Beethoven in his first season as music and artistic director of the New York Philharmonic, bringing his passion for the composer back to L.A. with performances of Beethoven's piano concertos and symphonies. The orchestra will also highlight minimalist composers such as Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams, celebrating their milestone birthdays with special programs and premieres.

The season will feature a diverse lineup of guest conductors, soloists, and ensembles, showcasing a wide range of musical styles and genres. From classical to jazz and pop, the L.A. Phil's programming will offer something for every music lover. The orchestra will also host guest orchestras, including the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal and the London Symphony, adding an international flair to the season.

YOLA, the youth orchestra and teaching program founded by Dudamel, will continue to play a vital role in the L.A. Phil's mission to inspire young musicians. The season will include a celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Gehry-designed Beckmen YOLA Center, honoring the legacy of architect Frank Gehry. Additionally, a pilgrimage to Topanga Tower will cap off Salonen's "Rituals" festival, featuring a unique collaboration of dance, music, and visual art.

As the L.A. Phil embarks on a season of innovation and celebration, the orchestra remains committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and engaging audiences in new and exciting ways. With a lineup of world-class performers and a diverse range of programming, the 2026-27 season promises to be a memorable and inspiring experience for music lovers everywhere.
