Michaela Coel Teams Up with A24 for Reimagined Bloodsport: Exploring the World of Fighters and Martial Arts

Michaela Coel has teamed up with A24 for a new project, where she will write and direct a reimagined version of the film Bloodsport. The original Bloodsport, released in 1988, starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as an American Army officer who competes in an underground martial arts tournament in Hong Kong called the Kumite. Coel expressed her excitement about exploring the world of fighters and the discipline required in the sport, with A24 as her collaborators.
The upcoming project will be produced by Marc Toberoff, with Alberto Lensi also serving as a producer. Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle will be executive producers on the A24-financed and distributed feature. Toberoff mentioned the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts introduced by the original Bloodsport and looks forward to bringing back the high-energy tournament format to the big screen.
The original Bloodsport led to three sequels without Van Damme, and there have been attempts at remakes in the past. Coel, represented by UTA and Maison Two, is currently working on the mini-series First Day on Earth for A24, HBO, and BBC, where she serves as a writer, executive producer, co-director, and star. She will also appear in A24's Mother Mary and Steven Soderbergh's The Christophers.
In conclusion, Michaela Coel's collaboration with A24 on a reimagined version of Bloodsport promises to bring a fresh perspective to the world of martial arts and fighters. With her creative vision and A24's support, this project is set to captivate audiences with its exploration of discipline, intensity, and the competitive spirit of the sport.
