MLB Partners with Polymarket and CFTC to Safeguard Prediction Market Integrity

Major League Baseball is venturing into the prediction market realm with two new agreements to safeguard the sport's integrity. The league has designated Polymarket as its official prediction market exchange and has forged an information-sharing pact with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Polymarket will have access to MLB marks and logos, as well as official data to facilitate market resolution, while the league will gain increased visibility and have a say in the regulations governing the anticipated billions of dollars in baseball-related trades this season.
Commissioner Rob Manfred and CFTC chairman Michael Selig recently signed a memorandum of understanding in Miami to establish a confidential information-sharing arrangement. The collaboration aims to address potential threats to integrity arising from specific markets. Selig emphasized the importance of implementing proper guardrails and integrity standards, underscoring the significance of the partnership with MLB in ensuring regulatory compliance.
Prediction markets have witnessed a surge in popularity in the U.S., enabling customers to engage in trading on yes/no propositions, including sports outcomes. Selig noted that these markets fall within the CFTC's regulatory purview, despite some states contending that they constitute unlicensed sports betting. Manfred highlighted the advantage of federal oversight in prediction markets, contrasting it with the state-by-state regulatory landscape of traditional sports betting.
MLB's entry into the prediction market arena aligns it with other major U.S. sports leagues like the NHL, MLS, and UFC, which have already established partnerships in this space. Selig indicated that the CFTC is actively engaging with additional sports leagues in the U.S. to address regulatory considerations. As part of their collaboration, MLB and Polymarket will develop an integrity framework to safeguard against market manipulation, particularly in areas like individual pitches and managerial or umpire decisions.
Protecting the integrity of the game remains MLB's paramount concern, with Manfred emphasizing the importance of staying ahead of developments in today's fast-paced world. By proactively engaging in the prediction market landscape and establishing robust integrity measures, MLB aims to uphold the sanctity of the sport while leveraging federal oversight to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape.
