Ricky Van Shelton rose to fame in the country music scene with his debut album "Wild-Eyed Dream" in 1987. Throughout his 20-year career, he achieved great success with over 20 singles on the Hot Country Songs chart, 10 of which reached the number one spot. On March 20, 1989, Shelton topped the charts for the fifth consecutive time with his rendition of Ned Miller's hit song "From a Jack to a King."
Originally recorded by Miller in 1957, "From a Jack to a King" tells the story of a man who finds love and happiness after getting married. Despite initial lackluster reception, the song became a hit when re-released in 1962, reaching the top 10 on multiple music charts.
Ricky Van Shelton's cover of "From a Jack to a King" was featured on his second studio album "Loving Proof" and became his fifth consecutive number one hit.
