PSL 2022: Matches to be Played in Empty Stadiums Due to Rising Oil Prices
Pakistan's premier domestic T20 league, the Pakistan Super League, will be held in empty stadiums this season due to the recent surge in oil prices. Originally planned to be played in six cities, the games will now only take place in Lahore and Karachi. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi explained that the ongoing conflict in the region has led to the spike in oil prices, making it necessary to avoid large gatherings at stadiums. As a result, the PCB decided to play the matches without spectators until the oil crisis is resolved. The opening ceremony has also been canceled as a precautionary measure.
Refunds will be issued for all sold tickets within 72 hours, and franchise owners will be compensated for the loss of revenue from gate receipts. Naqvi expressed regret to the cities of Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, and Peshawar, which will no longer host PSL games this season. He emphasized the need to conserve resources and restrict movements during this challenging time.
Consultations with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the eight franchises were conducted before the decision to limit the venues and hold matches in empty stadiums was finalized. Despite the challenges, the PCB is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved in the league.
Several foreign players have withdrawn from the PSL due to personal reasons, further impacting the league's dynamics. The absence of players like Australians Jake Fraser-McGurk and Spencer Johnson, South African Ottneil Baartman, and West Indian Gudakesh Motie will be felt during the tournament.
