Creighton University Basketball: Coach Greg McDermott's Legacy and Transition to Alan Huss

Creighton University's head basketball coach, Greg McDermott, is set to retire at the end of this season, according to sources. McDermott has had a successful tenure at Creighton, winning 365 games over 16 years. Throughout his 25-year coaching career in Division I, he has amassed a record of 514-319 and led teams to the Elite Eight and 13 NCAA tournaments.

Coach McDermott will be succeeded by Alan Huss, who has been designated as the coach-in-waiting. Huss, who previously coached at High Point, will take over the head coaching role for the 2026-27 season. The transition plan for Huss was put in place in April 2025, and he has been preparing for this opportunity since then.

During his time at Creighton, McDermott notably coached his son, Doug McDermott, and guided the team through the transition from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East. Under McDermott's leadership, Creighton achieved success in the Big East, winning the regular-season title in 2019-20 and maintaining a strong record in conference play.

Despite a challenging season for Creighton, finishing with a 15-17 record and breaking a streak of 10 consecutive 20-win seasons, McDermott's impact on the program and the successful transition to the Big East will be part of his lasting legacy. The coaching change signals a new chapter for Creighton basketball under the leadership of Alan Huss.
