Matthew Rutledge Indicted on Three Counts of Rape: Berkshire Grand Jury Investigation at Miss Hall’s School

Matthew Rutledge has been indicted on three counts of rape by a Berkshire grand jury following allegations made by Melissa Fares and Hilary Simon. The investigation into Rutledge began in the spring of 2024 when the Pittsfield Police Department looked into claims of sexual assault against students at Miss Hall’s School. Despite initial delays, the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office eventually took over the investigation and worked with special prosecutors and the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit to gather evidence.
A report commissioned by the Miss Hall’s School Board of Trustees revealed a pattern of inappropriate staff conduct, which further supported the allegations against Rutledge. After a thorough investigation, the team of special prosecutors found Rutledge to have violated Massachusetts General Law. District Attorney Shugrue commended the prosecutors, detectives, and the victims for their bravery and cooperation throughout the process.
State Representative Leigh Davis has been working on legislation, H.4538, to prevent educator sexual misconduct of children and youth, with the support of District Attorney Shugrue. The investigation into Rutledge’s alleged crimes and any other potential misconduct at Miss Hall’s School is ongoing. The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office encourages anyone with information to come forward by contacting the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit’s tipline.
Matthew Rutledge will be summoned to appear in court for an arraignment following the indictment. The legal process will continue as the case progresses, ensuring accountability for the crimes committed.
