Off The Record: Spike's Rock 'N' Roll Tour and Musical Anecdotes
Spike, the lead singer of the Quireboys, is embarking on a UK tour with a unique show called Off The Record: Stories From A Life In Rock ’N’ Roll. Despite his self-proclaimed lack of guitar skills, Spike incorporates some guitar playing into his performances. The idea for these storyteller gigs emerged during the first covid lockdown in 2020, and Spike has since entertained audiences with a mix of music, anecdotes, and banter.
Having done around two hundred shows, Spike's performances have evolved from playing cover songs like Darlin’ and Pearl’s A Singer to incorporating Quireboys tracks and spontaneous interactions with the audience. While he has a set list of about twenty-five songs, Spike often deviates from it, embracing the unpredictability and spontaneity of live performances.
Spike's backstage rider includes Newcastle Brown Ale as his drink of choice, having recently switched from Strongbow cider. Occasionally, Del Bromham from Stray joins Spike on stage, adding his guitar skills and comedic impressions to the mix. The duo's chemistry and banter create a lively and engaging atmosphere for the audience.
During his shows, Spike shares amusing anecdotes, such as the story of his bandmate Guy Bailey buying a retired police sniffer dog to help him locate his hidden drugs. Reflecting on his performances, Spike admits to occasionally waking up the next day wondering about some of the things he said on stage, particularly about his guitar playing skills.
Despite his solo endeavors, Spike is also working on new music with the Quireboys, collaborating with bandmate Luke Morley on songwriting. While each member of the band has individual projects, there are plans for a new Quireboys album in the future. Spike's tour, along with upcoming shows with Hot Knives and Tyla's Dogs D'amour, promises an exciting lineup for fans of rock music.
