Zoox's Expansion: Robotaxi Launch in Austin and Miami, Service Expansion in San Francisco and Las Vegas

Zoox is set to introduce its purpose-built robotaxis in Austin, Texas and Miami, Florida following successful testing in these cities over the past two years. The company will roll out rides later this year as part of its early-rider program. Additionally, Zoox is expanding its service areas in San Francisco and Las Vegas, with a focus on the eastern half of San Francisco for early riders and new destinations in Las Vegas, including The Sphere, T-Mobile Arena, and the Las Vegas Convention Center. The company is also testing its robotaxi at the Las Vegas airport in preparation for future service.

Due to federal restrictions, Zoox is currently only able to offer free rides to customers. However, the company is working to obtain exemptions from certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to launch commercial services with paid rides. Zoox has expressed optimism about receiving these exemptions and has partnered with Uber to make its robotaxis available on the ride-hail giant’s network in Las Vegas later this year. The company has driven nearly two million autonomous miles and served over 350,000 riders, gathering feedback to improve its services, including introducing features like bluetooth audio connectivity (ZooxCast) and a "Find My Zoox" feature to help riders locate their robotaxi in busy areas.

While Zoox may not be expanding as rapidly as Waymo, it is making significant progress. The company has started mapping the streets of Dallas and Phoenix for future testing and is already operating in Washington, D.C., Seattle, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. With its upcoming launches in Austin and Miami, Zoox is poised to continue its growth and innovation in the autonomous vehicle industry.
