Remembering Hoyt Axton: A Tribute to the Talented Songwriter and Performer

Today marks the birthday of Hoyt Axton, a talented songwriter and performer born in Duncan, Oklahoma in 1938. Axton's deep, resonant voice and songwriting skills led to hits for artists like Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, and Ringo Starr of the Beatles. He also found success as a performer with songs like "Della and the Dealer" and "When the Morning Comes." In addition to his music career, Axton appeared in several films, including the popular 1984 movie Gremlins.

Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, Axton honed his musical talents from a young age, learning classical piano and guitar. His mother, Mae Boren Axton, a renowned songwriter known as "the Queen Mother of Nashville," influenced his love for music. After a brief stint in college on a football scholarship, Axton joined the U.S. Navy before pursuing a career in music. He released his debut album, The Balladeer, in 1962, launching his music career.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Axton released multiple albums but gained recognition for his songwriting abilities. His song "Joy to the World" became a chart-topping hit for Three Dog Night, while Steppenwolf's rendition of "The Pusher" gained popularity after appearing in the film Easy Rider. Axton's success as a songwriter led him to establish his own record label, Jeremiah Records, in 1978, named after his famous song.

In addition to his music career, Axton ventured into acting, appearing in various films such as Smoky, The Black Stallion, and Heart Like a Wheel. However, his most memorable role came in the 1984 film Gremlins, where he portrayed the character Randall Peltzer. Despite his diverse talents and accomplishments, Axton passed away at the age of 61 in 1999, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the music and film industries.
