Billy Idol: The Evolution of an Iconic Stage Name

Billy Idol, originally known as William Michael Albert Broad, adopted his iconic stage name during his teenage years. A teacher's comment on his test paper inspired the name change. While frequenting a London club that required membership cards, Broad decided to go by "Billy Idle." However, a journalist pointed out the similarity to Eric Idle's last name, prompting Broad to change it to "Billy Idol." Despite initial reservations, he embraced the new persona, influenced by the trend of musicians adopting stage names. With over 50 years in the music industry, Billy Idol continues to be a prominent figure in rock music. He is currently a nominee for the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and has a documentary, "Billy Idol Should Be Dead," available for streaming on Hulu.
