The Oscars 2029: A New Era at the Peacock Theater

The Oscars ceremony in 2029 will have a new home at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, as part of a 10-year deal between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and AEG. This move will mark a significant change from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where the ceremony has been held for nearly two decades. The 101st Academy Awards will also be the first to be broadcast via YouTube, following a recent agreement.
AEG, a prominent developer and owner of entertainment venues worldwide, will oversee extensive upgrades to the Peacock Theater to enhance its stage, sound, lighting systems, lobbies, backstage facilities, and other production areas. The Academy will work closely with AEG to incorporate custom design elements tailored for the Oscars ceremony. The Peacock Theater, with a seating capacity of 7,100, will accommodate a larger audience compared to the Dolby Theatre's 3,400 seats.
The Oscars' red carpet arrivals and activities will take place at the expanded plaza of L.A. LIVE, a sprawling sports and entertainment district spanning 23 acres and 4 million square feet. The partnership between the Academy and AEG aims to create a dynamic and innovative setting for the global celebration of cinema, catering to both the live audience and film enthusiasts worldwide. The collaboration seeks to redefine the Oscars experience and showcase creativity and excellence in filmmaking.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Lynette Howell Taylor expressed excitement about the collaboration with AEG, highlighting the company's expertise in operating cutting-edge live performance venues. AEG's chief revenue officer, Todd Goldsten, emphasized L.A. LIVE's role as a cultural hub for hosting iconic events like the Oscars, underscoring the commitment to delivering an unforgettable experience for movie fans everywhere. The partnership between the Academy and AEG sets the stage for a new era of the Oscars, promising a fresh and engaging perspective on the prestigious awards ceremony.
