North Dakota Republican Party Endorses Alex Balazs for U.S. House Seat Rematch

The North Dakota Republican Party has officially endorsed Alex Balazs as their candidate for the state's U.S. House seat, setting the stage for a rematch of the 2024 primary election. Balazs, a military veteran from Cando, received the party's backing at the NDGOP State Convention without any opposition. He will be challenging incumbent U.S. Rep Julie Fedorchak in the upcoming June 9 primary election if she gathers enough signatures to be on the ballot. Balazs expressed his gratitude for the endorsement and urged unity within the party to secure victory in the upcoming election.

In the 2024 primary election, Fedorchak emerged victorious with 45% of the vote, while Balazs finished fourth with 4% of the vote. Fedorchak went on to win the general election with 69% of the vote against Democratic candidate Trygve Hammer. The North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party has endorsed Hammer for this year's race, potentially setting up another rematch for the general election. The NDGOP Convention in Minot also saw the endorsement of Deven Stycynski for the six-year Public Service Commission term, who will be challenging incumbent Sheri Haugen-Hoffart in the primary.

The convention did not endorse candidates for several other statewide offices, as none of the incumbents sought the party's endorsement this year. Balazs emphasized the importance of party unity and commitment, drawing inspiration from a Navy SEAL tradition of perseverance. The North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party has endorsed more candidates than the Republican Party for the upcoming primary election, with both parties gearing up for the Nov. 3 general election showdown.

Despite a failed attempt to issue a "letter of recommendation" for Chris Olson in the two-year term PSC race, the NDGOP Convention saw various discussions and decisions regarding party endorsements and candidate support. The party's vote to restrict no-show incumbents from using the Republican brand in the midterm election raised questions about legal enforcement. The state's open primaries and endorsement processes play a crucial role in determining candidates' access to the ballot under a party's name, highlighting the significance of party endorsements in North Dakota's political landscape.
