Premier League Fans Speak Out: Survey Reveals Overwhelming Opposition to VAR

A recent survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association revealed that the majority of Premier League fans are against the use of VAR. Over 8000 supporters participated in the poll, with more than 97% stating that VAR does not make watching football more enjoyable. Additionally, over 90% of respondents disagreed that VAR has enhanced the matchgoing experience.
When asked about their support for VAR in football, 75.71% of fans expressed their opposition to its use. The survey also indicated that more than 70% of fans do not believe that VAR has improved the overall accuracy of refereeing decisions. Fans are particularly frustrated with the time taken to reach decisions, with fewer than three percent agreeing that decisions are made in a reasonable amount of time.
While some fans support the use of VAR to review red cards, there is overall opposition to its use for offsides, fouls, and handballs in the build-up to goals. Goal-line technology, on the other hand, received strong support from over 93% of respondents. However, there is concern among fans about a possible expansion of VAR, with more than 70% opposing its use to review the award of corners.
Despite the mixed opinions on VAR, the survey results suggest that a significant number of fans now prefer watching games without VAR. The Football Supporters' Association's Premier League network manager, Thomas Concannon, highlighted the fans' concerns about the introduction of VAR.
The Premier League has acknowledged the importance of minimizing the impact of VAR on the supporter experience while emphasizing that VAR leads to more correct decisions. The league's research indicates that fans are largely in favor of keeping VAR but are seeking improvements in its implementation. The ongoing dialogue with supporters aims to address their concerns and enhance the use of VAR in football.
