2026 German Film Awards Nominations: Sound of Falling and Yellow Letters Lead the Pack

The 2026 German Film Awards, also known as the Lolas, have announced their nominations, with the films Sound of Falling and Yellow Letters leading the pack. Sound of Falling, directed by Mascha Schilinski, received 11 nominations, while Yellow Letters, directed by İlker Çatak, received nine. They will be competing in various categories, including best director, alongside Simon Verhoeven's comedy Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke, which received seven nominations.
In the best feature film category, Sound of Falling, Yellow Letters, and Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke will be up against other notable films like Amrum, 22 Lengths, and The Disappearance of Josef Mengele. Sound of Falling, a film depicting four generations of young women in northeast Germany, has been praised as a haunting meditation on womanhood and rural strife. Yellow Letters, on the other hand, explores themes of authoritarian oppression, artistic conflict, and family drama set in contemporary Turkey but shot entirely in Germany.
Another film making waves is Manitou's Canoe, a slapstick comedy Western parody directed by Michael "Bully" Herbig, which was already announced as the biggest box office hit of the year. The German Film Academy revealed the nominees for the 76th edition of the German Film Awards, with the awards ceremony scheduled to take place in Berlin on May 29, hosted by Christian Friedel for the second consecutive year. Last year, Tim Fehlbaum's September 5, a real-life thriller based on the 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attacks, was a big winner at the German Film Awards.
