Galveston County Indicts Bacliff Man in Texas Killing Fields Murders: New Developments in Cold Cases

A Bacliff man, James Dolphs Elmore Jr., has been indicted by a Galveston County grand jury in connection with two murders related to the infamous "Texas Killing Fields" cases. The charges include manslaughter and felony tampering with evidence in the death of Laura Miller, as well as an additional tampering with evidence charge in the murder of Audrey Cook. The Texas Killing Fields, a 25-acre area in League City where over 30 bodies, mostly young women, were discovered between the 1970s and 1990s, has been the focus of unsolved murders and even inspired a 2011 film.
Clyde Hedrick, a longtime suspect in the Killing Fields cases, recently passed away before facing new charges. Despite his death, evidence of his alleged involvement in the killings was presented to the grand jury to provide transparency and closure for victims' families. Hedrick had previously been convicted of manslaughter in another case related to the Killing Fields.
The new indictments against Elmore and the renewed investigation efforts began in 2024 under District Attorney Kenneth Cusick's leadership. A multi-agency task force reexamined evidence and re-interviewed witnesses in connection to the Killing Fields cases, leading to the indictments against Elmore for his alleged role in the deaths of Cook and Miller. More details are expected to be revealed during an upcoming press conference.
The Texas Killing Fields, located near Calder Road and Ervin Street in League City, have been associated with multiple unsolved cases, with the broader area linked to many more mysterious deaths. Officials have met with victims' families to discuss the indictments and emphasize that the investigation is ongoing. Various law enforcement agencies, including local police departments across Galveston County and the FBI, are collaborating to seek answers in these decades-old cases. The Galveston County Criminal District Attorney's office commends the efforts of the involved agencies in assisting with these challenging investigations.
