Washington, D.C., Murder Suspect Charged with Setting Fire to Apartment and Killing Victim

A man in Washington, D.C., has been charged with murder after allegedly killing another man, tying him to a chair, and setting fire to an apartment in Northwest D.C. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Rico Barnes, is facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the death of 40-year-old Syed Hammad Hussain. DC Fire and EMS responded to a report of smoke in the hallway of an apartment on Rhode Island Avenue, NW, where they found Hussain tied up and deceased. Police revealed that Hussain had suffered blunt force trauma and strangulation before the fire was set.
During a press conference, Commander Kevin Kentish disclosed that video evidence played a crucial role in the investigation. The footage captured two individuals following Hussain into his apartment building on the night of the incident. The suspects allegedly assaulted Hussain in the lobby before forcing him towards his apartment. It was noted that Hussain did not recognize his attackers prior to the attack. Interim Chief Jeffery W. Carroll mentioned that Barnes and the other suspect were seen taking items from Hussain's apartment after the assault.
Rico Barnes was apprehended by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on Monday, while a second suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, is in custody on unrelated charges. Chief Carroll described the incident as tragic, emphasizing that Hussain was targeted after returning home from getting food. The suspects took advantage of Hussain's trust by gaining entry to his apartment under false pretenses. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to bring justice to the victim and his family.
