Derby City Center Car Accident: Man Faces Charges After Striking Pedestrians

A man has made a court appearance following a car accident in Derby city center where a group of pedestrians were struck. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when a black Suzuki Swift hit seven people on Friar Gate, resulting in serious injuries. The accused, Sandhu Ponnachan, 36, from Alvaston, faced charges including grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, dangerous driving, and possession of a bladed article. Ponnachan, originally from India, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court and was remanded to appear at Derby Crown Court on 29 April. The injured individuals, aged between 36 and 52, are recovering from their injuries, with four already discharged from the hospital.
