Overcoming Adversity: Marlo DeRosa's Journey to Success in Hockey and Academics

The 2024-25 hockey season was a challenging time for Castlegar goalie Marlo DeRosa, who was struggling with focus both on and off the ice. Despite his academic success and French immersion education, DeRosa found himself cut from the Castlegar Rebels team. However, a diagnosis of ADHD turned things around for him, leading to a successful season where he was named Alberta’s Heritage Junior Hockey League’s top goalie.
DeRosa's ADHD diagnosis provided him with clarity and the tools to excel in his hockey career. With the support of his family, coaches, and hometown physician, Dr. Megan Taylor, DeRosa achieved remarkable success on the ice. His improved focus, stability, and energy levels have not only enhanced his performance in hockey but also in his personal life.
The recognition DeRosa received as the top goalie in the HJHL was a testament to his hard work and dedication. Despite the challenges he faced, including the loss of his friend Nathan Jackman, DeRosa continues to honor his memory on and off the ice. His success in hockey has inspired him to pursue a college education, with a particular interest in psychology, influenced by his ADHD diagnosis journey.
Looking ahead, DeRosa plans to continue playing hockey in the Alberta league for two more seasons with the goal of eventually playing for a college team. His passion for the sport and dedication to his academic pursuits highlight his determination to succeed both on and off the ice. With a bright future ahead, DeRosa remains grateful for the support that has helped him overcome obstacles and achieve his goals.
