Stay Safe on the Roads this Easter Bank Holiday Weekend: Gardai Launch Road Safety Campaign

The Easter Bank Holiday weekend road safety campaign is starting today and will run until next Tuesday. Gardai emphasize that Bank holiday weekends are the busiest times on Irish roads, increasing the risk of serious or fatal road traffic accidents due to the higher number of road users. Analysis of fatal and serious injury collisions this year shows that drivers and pedestrians are at the greatest risk. The most critical time for accidents during a bank holiday weekend is between 3pm and 6pm. Tragically, two individuals have lost their lives on Midlands roads this year, with one fatality each in Laois and Westmeath. Nationally, there have been 41 road fatalities in the first quarter of this year.
Emergency Medicine Consultant and Alcohol Action Ireland board member Dr. Eoin Fogarty stresses the importance of addressing drink driving with stricter measures.
