Dionne Warwick Returns to Namesake School for Emotional Student Performances
Dionne Warwick made a heartfelt return to the elementary school in East Orange that now bears her name. The visit was marked by emotional performances from students singing some of Warwick's iconic songs. The 85-year-old singer attended the debut of the school's newly renovated auditorium, where she watched the student choir perform songs like "What the World Needs Now Is Love" and "That's What Friends Are For." Warwick expressed her gratitude to the students for their outstanding performance.
The school's new auditorium replaces a space that had been unusable for nearly two decades due to a ceiling collapse. Warwick, along with East Orange Mayor Ted Green and Principal Passion Moss-Hasan, commended Warwick's long-standing connection to the city and the school, which was renamed in her honor in 1996. Warwick reminisced about her time at the school when it was known as Lincoln School and shared memories of receiving her first diploma on the same stage.
During her address to the crowd, Warwick reflected on a conversation she had with a principal years ago about the lack of a strong music program at the school. She was told that it was a matter of cost. The new auditorium seemed to symbolize a positive change in that regard. Warwick expressed her gratitude to the school for their efforts and the impact they have had on her. The event coincided with a busy period in Warwick's career, including legal battles over royalties and upcoming projects.
Despite the recent developments in her career, Warwick emphasized that her visit to the school was not about her own achievements but about celebrating the students. She referred to the students as "my babies" and thanked them for the day's celebration. Warwick's presence at the school highlighted her deep connection to the community and her commitment to supporting the next generation of students. The event was a touching moment that showcased Warwick's enduring legacy and her dedication to education and music.
