Mike McCready: A Musical Journey at 60

Happy 60th birthday to Mike McCready, the founding guitarist of Pearl Jam, who celebrates his milestone on April 5. Pearl Jam, formed in 1990, includes McCready, lead singer Eddie Vedder, guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, and drummer Dave Krusen, and has been a prominent rock band for years. McCready has co-written several of the band's hit songs and is known for his distinctive guitar style. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of Pearl Jam.
In a recent interview, McCready shared his thoughts on turning 60, expressing gratitude for his family and the opportunity to continue making music. He values the connection with Pearl Jam fans and the energy they bring to their performances. Despite his milestone birthday, he prefers a low-key celebration, opting for a quiet dinner in Seattle. McCready's musical journey began in his youth, and after a hiatus, he found inspiration to play guitar again after seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan perform.
McCready's path intertwined with fellow musicians like Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, leading to the formation of Pearl Jam. He also collaborated with Chris Cornell in Temple Of The Dog and co-founded the grunge supergroup Mad Season. McCready's upcoming project, a graphic novel titled Farewell To Seasons, draws on his experiences in the Seattle music scene and pays tribute to those who passed away prematurely. The novel will be accompanied by a rock opera on vinyl.
Reflecting on the loss of peers in the music industry due to substance abuse, McCready acknowledges his own struggles with addiction and the importance of overcoming them. He emphasizes the fragility of life and the impact of choices made in youth. Through his music and creative projects, McCready aims to honor the memory of those who didn't make it to his age and inspire others to persevere.
