North Star Bioenergy Project: A Partnership for Sustainable Carbon Removal in Saskatchewan

Svante Technologies Inc. and Meadow Lake Tribal Council have partnered to develop the North Star bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project in Saskatchewan, Canada. This project aims to deliver 626,000 tonnes of durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits to Microsoft over a 15-year period. The carbon capture plant will be established at the MLTC Bioenergy Centre, utilizing sustainable waste biomass from local sawmills. North Star Carbon Solutions LP, a partnership between MLTC and Svante's subsidiary, Carbon Alpha Corp, will own and operate the plant, generating up to 90,000 tonnes of CDR credits annually.

The CDR credits will be independently verified and issued in compliance with carbon removal crediting standards. The project will focus on using waste biomass and implementing robust monitoring, reporting, and verification practices to ensure the long-term durability of carbon removal. Svante will provide the necessary funding for the project until construction begins, with commercial operation scheduled for early 2029.

This partnership marks a significant milestone for BECCS in Canada, driven by Microsoft's commitment to carbon removal. The agreement with Microsoft underscores the quality of North Star's CDRs and highlights the Canadian market's readiness to support such innovative projects. The North Star project's integrated system for carbon removal from source to sink demonstrates a sustainable approach to addressing carbon emissions and advancing environmental stewardship.
