ESPN Expands Global Reach Through Disney+ App: Bringing Sports Fans Closer Worldwide

ESPN is broadening its reach to over 50 countries through the Disney+ app, expanding its international presence to nearly 100 markets. The app will offer a diverse range of live events, including NBA, NHL, and college sports, as well as access to ESPN's acclaimed 30 for 30 documentary series and studio shows like ESPN FC. In Europe, the expansion will enhance Disney+'s sports content, while select Asia-Pacific markets will have access to curated English-language ESPN programming.

The expanded ESPN service, launched last August, combines linear network feeds with streaming originals and other content. Subscribers can access the service through top pay-TV providers at no extra cost or as a stand-alone subscription starting at $29.99 per month. Disney aims to make its platforms accessible to all consumers, regardless of their pay-TV package status, and has refrained from reporting quarterly subscriber numbers, following Netflix's approach.

The distribution of the new streaming service has faced challenges, with negotiations with YouTube TV resulting in a blackout of Disney networks, including ESPN, for 15 days during the football season. However, a deal was reached, allowing YouTube TV subscribers to activate ESPN without an additional monthly fee. The expansion of ESPN on Disney+ reflects the commitment of ESPN and Disney to engage with sports fans globally, providing greater access and deeper connections with fans everywhere.
