Virginia State Trooper Injured in I-495 Foot Chase Incident: Suspect Apprehended After Fleeing on Metro Train

A Virginia State Police trooper is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a driver during a foot chase on I-495 near Telegraph Road. The incident occurred when the trooper attempted to stop a black Chrysler 300 for an expired temporary registration on Interstate 495 southbound at the Mixing Bowl. The driver did not stop, leading to a chase involving multiple troopers. The pursuit continued onto Interstate 495 eastbound, where the suspect rear-ended a tractor trailer east of Telegraph Road and fled on foot into the City of Alexandria. During the chase, the trooper who initiated the stop was hit by an unrelated vehicle, sustaining a foot injury.
The suspect driver evaded authorities by boarding a train at the Eisenhower Avenue Metro station, but was eventually apprehended at the L’Enfant Plaza station in Washington, D.C. The suspect, identified as Gregory S. Newton, 57, of Springfield, faces charges including eluding, hit and run, possession of a controlled substance, driving while suspended, and assault on a police officer by Metro Transit Police. The incident is currently under investigation.
