Na Hong-jin's Sci-Fi Thriller 'Hope' Set to Shine at Cannes Film Festival
Renowned Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin is making a highly anticipated return to the Cannes Film Festival after a decade since his acclaimed movie "The Wailing." His latest project, a sci-fi thriller titled "Hope," will be featured in the main competition at Cannes this May. The film, which runs over two hours, promises to deliver a unique and genre-bending story that has never been told before.
"Hope" marks Na's first film to include English dialogue and features a diverse cast that includes Korean stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon, alongside Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton. The plot revolves around police chief Bum-seok, played by Hwang, who receives a disturbing report about a tiger sighting in a remote village near Korea's Demilitarized Zone, leading to a series of mysterious events.
Na's inspiration for "Hope" stemmed from a single image that came to him in 2017, leading to the creation of his most ambitious project to date. The film was shot by acclaimed Korean cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo, known for his work on award-winning films like "Parasite" and "Burning." Na has established himself as a prominent figure at Cannes, with all of his previous films premiering at the festival, showcasing his unique storytelling and directorial style.
"The Wailing," Na's previous film, garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, solidifying his position as a master of genre cinema. With "Hope," Na has pushed the boundaries further, reportedly investing a substantial budget to bring his vision to life. The film is a collaboration between Na's Forged Films and Plus M Entertainment, with international sales handled by Plus M and North American rights managed by UTA Independent Film Group.
